Purpose

• Establish a Distinguished Flying Cross special license plate program to recognize recipients of the Distinguished Flying Cross by allowing them to display a distinctive plate on certain vehicles.

Eligible applicants and vehicles

• Eligible applicants: individuals who are recipients of the Distinguished Flying Cross.
• Eligible vehicles: passenger automobiles, one-ton pickup trucks, motorcycles, or recreational vehicles.
• Applicants must pay the normal vehicle registration tax and comply with all relevant registration and driver licensing rules.

Application timing

• Applications for the special plates may be made only when renewing registration or at the first time of registration.

Plate issuance and quantity

• For each qualified applicant, the commissioner may issue only one set of plates, or a single plate for a motorcycle.

Plate design

• The emblem on the plates must include the Distinguished Flying Cross medal and the phrase DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS.
• The design is created in consultation with the commissioner of veterans affairs.

Fees and replacement

• No fee is charged for issuing the Distinguished Flying Cross plates.
• Plates must be replaced free of charge if damaged.
• There is no annual fee charged for subsequent years when the listed vehicle is registered under the state’s regular registration provisions.

Transferability

• The plates may be transferred to another qualifying motor vehicle upon notifying the commissioner, and without a fee, if the new vehicle is owned by the same individual and is eligible to bear the plates.

Exemption from other rules

• These special plates are exempt from a specified provision (section 168.1293 subdivision 2).
